Earthquake Resistant Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper briefly reviews the development of earthquake resistant design of buildings. The state-of-the-art of seismic design is discussed from the viewpoint of the performance criteria of buildings. These are (a) serviceability from frequent minor-intensity earthquake motions, (b) repairability from an infrequent but major-intensity earthquake motion, and (c) life safety from the maximum possible earthquake motion. The relation between the strength and ductility is discussed in length. With the introduction of performance-based engineering, the importance of repairability and serviceability criteria is emphasized. The concept of capacity design is outlined. A weak-beam strong-column mechanism is selected as an example of the target yielding mechanism for design.

Seismic Response of Reinforced Concrete Columns
There are a large number of reinforced concrete buildings in seismically active areas of the world that are not built in accordance with modern seismic design provisions such as those published by American Concrete Institution ([ACI] Committee 318, 2008). In the United States and other parts of the developed world, these buildings were constructed between 1930s to mid 1970s according to the bui...

One of the main tasks of engineers is to design structural systems light and economic as possible, yet resistant enough to withstand all possible loads arising during their service life and to absorb the induced seismic energy in a controlled and predictable fashion. The traditional trial-and-error design approach is not capable to determine an economical design satisfying also the code require...

It seems counter-intuitive to assert that simple, unsophisticated, non-engineered, timber and masonry structures might be safer in large earthquakes than new structures of reinforced concrete, but such has proven to be the case in a number of recent earthquakes, including the Izmit and Düzce earthquakes in Turkey of 1999, the Bhuj earthquake in India of 2001, and the Kashmir earthquake in Pakis...

Background and objective: Estimating the vulnerability rate of urban textures in seismic incident following a major earthquake (aftershocks) is crucial in decision making and crisis management. For this purpose, it is necessary to calculate the vulnerability of buildings due to the successive incidents and to use them in the vulnerability estimation for probable future aftershocks. Seismic frag...
